How to Do Basic Image Editing in WordPress:-Do you guys have idea that you can do basic editing of image in your WordPress admin dashboard? This may include image cropping, rotating, scale image sizes and flipping them vertically or horizontally.

These features come in use when you are away from you main computer system and uploading images & pictures on the go. WordPress enables you to quickly resize images without using image editing software.

In this post, here we will show you how to use WordPress basic image editor that offers you features like crop, flip, rotate or scale images.

Editing Images in WordPress Admin Area:-

The initial thing you need to do is to upload image in WordPress. You can upload a image via post editor while writing a post, by using Media>>Add new page.

Once you have uploaded image, you need to visit Media>> Library page. Now locate the image you have uploaded and tap on it.

This will open image in popup window. You will see details of image in right column and image preview in the left.

Now there are two methods to open image with built-in wordpress image editor. First option is to click below the image preview on edit image button which open the image editor inside the popup. Another option is to click on “Edit Image Details” link.

Clicking on edit image details link will close the media popup & take you to the edit page.

Here you may click on “Edit image” button that will open the edit screen of image. On the right side column you will see bunch of options to resize the image.

Let’s have a look at what all these options can do and how to use these options/features to edit your media image.

How to Do Basic Image Editing in WordPress

  1. Crop:- This feature allows you to simply crop the images and then select the image area you want to crop out from the original image.
  2. Rotate:- The two rotate button options allows you to rotate images clockwise or anti-clockwise.
  3. Flip:– Flip buttons enable you to flip an image horizontally or vertically.
  4. Undo/Redo:- If you don’t like the changes you have made, then simply undo your changes or redo them to revert back.

Now look at the options available in the right column of image edit screen.

  1. Scale Image:- Use this option to manually scale the image keeping the original proportion. You have to use this option before cropping the image otherwise you are not able to keep image proportions.
  2. Aspect Ratio:- if you want to keep certain aspect ratio then this feature allow you to set it. After that click on crop button to select an area while using the ratio you have defined.
  3. Thumbnail Settings:- Here you can choose whether you want to execute these changes to all image sizes. Keep in mind this is the smallest image size created by wordpress for this image. its not similar to featured image or post thumbnail.

Once you done click on save, scale or update button to apply the changes you have made.
