3 ways to fix 401 Error in WordPress:-
1. Temporarily take away Password Protection on WordPress Admin
If you have password- protected your WordPress website admin directory then this is very useful solution that you need.
Go to your WordPress hosting control panel and situate the Directory privacy or password Protected Directories icon.
Once you open it, you will see all the data on your hosting account. Browse to your wp-admin directory and select it. The control panel will show now your password protection setting. Now simply uncheck the box next to “Password protect this directory” option and click on the save button.
After that click on the go button and scroll down the bottom. From here you need to delete username and for this you used to your login password protected directory.
You have successfully disabled your password protection directory from you WordPress admin. Now, it works normally and You can try to log into your WordPress website.
2. Switch to a Default WordPress Theme
Sometimes you WordPress theme’s inside function may arise 401 errors on your website. For fix this type of issue you need to switch default WordPress theme.
Firstly, go to Appearance>> themes. Now if you have a default WordPress theme installed, then go ahead and activate it. If you don’t have any default theme installed in your website then you need to install and activate.
After switching the theme you can go and check your website. If everything works proper then theme was causing 401 errors. You can report the theme developer and they may be able to help you for resolve your errors and fix it. If doesn’t works then you can permanently change your wordpress website.
3. Deactivate All your WordPress Site Plugins
A misbehaving and poor configured WordPress plugin can also create 401 error on your website. You will need to deactivate all WordPress plugins to find out the errors caused by one of them.
You can visit plugin page and easily deactivate WordPress plugins from inside the admin area.
However, if you don’t have access of WordPress admin area then you will need to use FTP to deactivate all WordPress Plugins. Once you are connect then go to wp-content >> folder and rename the plugins folder ti plugins deactivated.
the folder which was renamed will deactivate WordPress plugins.
You can go admin area of your website and try to log in. if everything works fine then meaning is one of the plugin was arise issue.
Now you need to switch back from FTP client and rename one again your plugin’s folder.
Next step is return to admin area and go to plugins page. You can now activate each plugin one at a time until you start seeing 401 error again.
