How to fix WordPress Error “The Site is experiencing technical difficulties” issue?

Sometimes, the simple issue is rollback to the site. To do so, you require a backup of your site. Regrettably, not everyone take backup of their site and if you are one of those people then this tutorial is for you.

To fix the issue, you’ve to search out where the issue goes wrong. You can do this by troubleshooting the issue where it was a theme or plugin conflict.

Theme Conflict Troubleshoot:-

For theme troubleshoot, just activate a default theme such as twenty nineteen. Unlikely, because your website is facing error, you need to perform the troubleshoot either with web host’s file manager or use FTP, SFTP. Important thing to note is that while switching themes, you won’t lose your theme’s setting. To do this, Rename active theme’s folder by adding OFF or DISABLE at the end of folder’s name. For instance- if you’re using “Twenty Nineteen” and the folder name is “twentynineteen”. Then Rename it to “twentynineteenDISABLE” or “twentynineteenOLD”. Navigate back to front-end of your site and refresh it.

Aim is to see that if the error resolves. If it doesn’t then it is not a theme issue. If it doesn’t, then it is not theme issue. Make sure to rename the theme folder back to original name when you’ve done troubleshooting.

Plugin Conflict Troubleshoot:-

If theme is not creating issue, then it might be a plugin. And troubleshoot is similar. It might be easier to rename the plugin folder as “pluginOFF”. Visit the website and login. This will turn off all the available plugins. Please note, it wouldn’t remove original setting of those plugins as they will be there when you reactivate them later.

Once the plugins are off, Navigate back and rename folder back to “plugins”. Go to WordPress admin area & reactivate each plugin, one by one until you get the screen says “The Site is experiencing technical difficulties”. Plugin that you just reactivated is the cause of issue.

Once the issue is found, you most likely want to rollback theme & plugin causing problem. You can do that through these ways:

  1. Download original plugin files from WordPress plugin directory & replace plugin via Filemanager with your web host or through FTP/SFTP.
  2. Use Rollback plugin to roll plugin back to previous version.

If you are using WP Rollback, it will offer you many versions to select from. It will let you know what version you have. Here is the steps by which you can idea of how use WP rollback.

Step 1: Select the plugin that you want to rollback. Tap on “Rollback” if it is shown in the plugins listed in admin area.

Step 2: Select the version you want to rollback on.

Step 3: Read the warning shown. It may be better to test, before rollback. Click on “Rollback” only when you’re sure.

You need to hold off to update when the developer release another version of theme/plugin.
