You are asked to select a ad type. You can choose from “Display ads”, “In-feed ads” and “In- article ads”.
If you’re unsure about which kind of ads are good for you, then start with display ads. In the next step- you need to enter a name for this ad unit and select ad size & type.
The Ad name is used only for internal purposes, so you can give it a name as per your choice. Next option is selecting the ad size. Google offers wide variety of ad sizes, so you can select whether you like to your ad to be responsive or of fixed size.

An auto ad uses a single code snippet to generate ads everywhere on the site. That means you should have to add code to the pages where you want to show ads.
One way to do so is to add the code to theme’s header.php file. But disadvantage of this method is that ad code will be lost while you update or switch the theme.
